FAQs
Edion designs, manufactures and sells accessories for the electric vehicle market. Many of the team at Edion have owned and driven EV and Hybrid vehicles for many years now. As a result, many of the product ideas have come from the team’s first hand experiences and requirements of owning and driving these vehicles. Edion are keen to assist as many people to get into the electric and hybrid vehicle market, and to make owning and operating them as safe and convenient as possible regardless of whether they have access to off street parking. Further to this, certainly in the UK market, the rules have been changing with recent updates to the highway code in 2022 regarding electric vehicle charging.
Edion has evolved from Ponting Engineering Consultants Ltd, a design engineering consultancy and manufacturing company. A family run business, we have many years of experience in the design, development and manufacturing of premium products in the UK and have also specifically designed and developed EV chargers for successful brands. We aim to find unique solutions to problems, demonstrated by the many patents successfully granted for our innovative ideas. This innovative ethos has followed through into the Edion brand with further design features already having patents pending on our inital products.
Our first product, an outdoor cable protector, Edion Protect, has been designed specifically for use with EV charging cables. The cable protector uniquely retains the EV charging cable enabling the cable protector and charging cable to be rolled up and stored together. The EV charging cable is safely secured under the heavy duty cable protector which assists it in staying flat to the ground, thus reducing trip hazards as well as protecting the cable. Our EV charging hazard warning signs can be easily attached to the cable so ensuring maximum hazard warning to pedestrians whilst charging electric vehicles across pavements.
At Edion we strongly support UK manufacturers and suppliers. All our products are designed and developed at our factory in Essex. Our cable protectors and trip hazard signs are made in the UK and we are committed to sourcing as many components as possible from UK suppliers. We believe in well designed quality products which solve everyday problems.
We sell EV charging accessories. We have a standard cable protector (Edion Protect) and an illuminated cable protector (Edion Glow). Both versions can be rolled up with your EV cable which can be secured to the cable protector using the included fixing kit. The cable protectors can be driven over and are suitable for outdoor use. We also sell an EV charging hazard warning sign to securely attach to your EV charging cable. Displaying a trip hazard warning sign whilst charging on a public highway is a requirement in the Highway Code published April 2022.
The EV cable is retained in the protector using cable ties through pre drilled holes on the underside of the cable protector. This innovative solution is very straightforward and easy to do. A pair of cable cutters is all that is needed.
To remove the cable from the cable protector, simply snip the cable ties. The cable protector has been designed to hold cables up to a diameter of 15mm which is more than amble for standard EV charging cables including 3 phase cables. However, please check the diameter of your cable before purchasing.
The Edion cable protector is heavy duty and wider than other cable protectors on the market. It has been designed specifically for electric vehicle charging cables. The cable retention feature ensures your cable is not a trip hazard as the cable protector lies flat to the floor and can be safely navigated by wheelchairs and prams. The yellow stripes or illumination stripes ensure the cable protector is highly visible to pedestrians.
Once the cable is secured it is very easy to roll up the cable protector with the EV cable when not in use. As the cable is secured to the protector, the protector will not move away from the cable or cannot be easily stolen.
The cable protector lengths start at 1.5m and can be purchased up to 8m. It can be easily cut to size. If charging an electric car across a pavement please ensure the entire width of pavement is covered by the cable protector to comply with Highway Code requirements. If you require a custom length, then please get in touch for a quote here.
The cable protectors are designed and manufactured in the UK so through your purchase you are supporting UK based manufacturing.
Dimensions of the Edion Protect cable protector:
width: 120mm

Yes, the cable protector stays flat to the ground. When removed from the box, lay flat on the floor and the protector will settle to the ground. Ensure your cable ties are inserted correctly (instruction link) so they don’t protrude.
Please refer to your local council for guidance. Councils have their own policies and regulations regarding trailing a charging cable across a pavement. However, wherever you are charging, please ensure the cable protector covers the full area, a warning sign is displayed and remove the cable and cable protector once the charging is complete.
The cable protector can also be used in your garden for securing cables for Christmas lights, hot tubs, outdoor lighting and heating and for protecting garden hoses etc. The cable protector can also be used at outdoor, community and sports events for preventing trip hazards from electricity cables.
Yes, you can order a custom length. The cable protector size starts at 1.5m and is sold in further 1m lengths. Edion Protect cable covers are easy to cut to size if necessary. For a quote for a cable protector over 8m in length or any other length, please contact us.
